The year was 1954, and in December of that year, Merle Miller graduated from the Reisch American School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. But he was recruited by an insurance company and soon became the regional manager for South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. After reaching that pinnacle, he decided to get back into what he truly loved, which was real estate and auctioneering.

So, in 1977, he purchased a real estate firm in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, known as Koch's Realty. That started a 50-year legacy that has now spanned three generations.

His son Marshall obtained his real estate license in 1983 at 18 years old and, at one time, was the youngest licensee in the state of South Dakota. A few years later, Marshall, along with his dad, Merle, obtained their state-certified general appraisal licenses together.

Brother Forrest joined the firm in 1997, and all three worked together for decades. Merle continued working with the public in the industry that he loved until his passing in 2005, when Forrest took over his position as lead auctioneer. He graduated from the same school as Merle did 56 years earlier.

Merle's work ethic, integrity, honesty, sense of fair play, and willingness to lend a helping hand have been instilled in his boys from day one and continue to this day.

Fifty years later, no one other than Merle would have been more proud than when his grandson Jackson Miller joined the firm two years ago, marking three generations.

Although, at one time, Merle Miller Real Estate & Auction was one of the largest real estate and auction firms in South Dakota, with offices in Sioux Falls, Madison, and Volga, and more than 30 agents, we've always remained a family business, first and foremost.
